Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using such treatments need to be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
